In a significant move that's set to reshape the landscape of sports memorabilia and trading card grading, Collectors Universe, a leader in third-party grading and authentication services, has announced its acquisition of SGC (Sportscard Guaranty Corporation), one of its foremost competitors. This deal marks a pivotal moment in the industry, signaling not just the merger of two giants but also the potential for unprecedented growth and innovation in card grading technology and services.

SGC, a reputable grading company based out of Boca Raton, Florida, publicly announced the completion of this acquisition on a Thursday morning Feb 29, 2024. The company's President, Peter Steinberg, took to social media to share a video message, articulating his enthusiasm about the merger. Steinberg underscored SGC's dedication to expanding its presence and enhancing the grading experience for collectors, stating, "SGC has been a mainstay in the hobby for over two decades, and in recent years our team has made a very aggressive push to expand the SGC footprint and offer collectors the best grading experience possible."

Following the acquisition, SGC will maintain its operational independence under the larger umbrella of Collectors but will benefit from the additional resources and expertise that Collectors provides. Steinberg will continue to spearhead SGC, focusing on the company's daily operations and steering its long-term strategic vision. This includes broadening SGC's service offerings and further elevating the grading experience for collectors. Steinberg expressed optimism about the future, stating, “With the resources and expertise of collectors behind us, the sky is truly the limit as to what SGC can achieve”.

PSA, recognized as the dominant force in the card grading market, commands a staggering 78 percent market share, according to Gem Rate. It is trailed by CGC, SGC, and Beckett. The acquisition of SGC by Collectors is part of a broader expansion strategy that has seen the conglomerate acquire several other companies in the collectibles domain, including Goldin Co. (an auction house), WATA Games, Card Ladder, PCGS coin grading, and the Long Beach Expo collectibles trade show.

Nat Turner, CEO of Collectors, articulated that the addition of SGC will enhance the diverse range of collecting services already offered by Collectors. He emphasized that Collectors' portfolio “focuses on service providers that bring expertise, quality and value to hobbyists, and SGC has built a strong reputation on these three fronts”. Turner expressed confidence that SGC's strong standing in the industry, founded on reliability and excellence, will complement Collectors' existing suite of services, enriching the overall collector experience.

Highlighting the customer-centric approach of both entities, Turner and Steinberg shared their excitement about the potential benefits this acquisition brings to collectors. Turner mentioned in a company release, “We recognize that every collector has their own preferred authentication and grading provider, and we look forward to providing expertise that will continue to enhance SGC’s customer offering”. Steinberg reiterated this sentiment, “this is all about our customers, and we are excited to take this major step forward as we continue to improve SGC’s products and services that collectors have come to love.”
